C & K Australian Shepherds
|
Australian Shepherds were originally bred and raised for herding. They are
intelligent and are born with the ability and eagerness to please their
owner/owners. Aussies are happy-spirited dogs that are easy to train, have the
instinct of a working dog, and also make great family pets. They are a very loyal
dog with a relaxed personality and easy-going disposition.
An Australian Shepherd makes a great addition to any family. They are good
with children and usually are very protective of their owners. It is very common
for an Australian Shepherd to appear timid around strangers.
The Aussie grows up to be a medium-sized dog. The adult male stands about 20
to 23 inches and the adult female usually stands 18 to 21 inches. The size of an
adult Aussie male usually ranges from 50 to 65 pounds. The adult female Aussie
usually ranges 40 to 55 pounds. The average lifespan on an Aussie is 14 to 16
years.
The breed comes in several color variations and patterns. The coat comes in
blue merle, black, red or red merle, all with or without white markings and copper
points. The Aussie's hair coat is a double coat with a medium length and
medium texture. An Aussie's hair may be straight or wavy.
The eyes of the Australian Shepherd give it a striking appearance. The eyes
come in a variety of colors: brown, blue, amber, or any combination of these
colors, which can include speckling and marbling. These colors can be in one
eye or both eyes. The eye colors are a unique characteristic of the Aussie.
It is important that the Aussie is socialized regularly so they won't become shy
and withdrawn. Aussies require regular exercise to keep them occupied. They
enjoy playing frisbee and ball. Aussies are successful with training classes and
learning agility. They are "people dogs" and also need adequate "people time"
to maintain their loyalty and emotional behavior.
Anyone who is considering adding an Australian Shepherd to their family needs
to be aware of the care needed to maintain the Aussie. Aussies do not require a
lot of care. Grooming the Australian Shepherd is rather simple; just regular
brushing, especially when shedding. They can be bathed as needed. Obedience
training is recommended. Exercise is strongly recommended. An owner of an
Aussies needs to be able to spend enough time with their dog; after all, it is a
part of the family.
